Awesome. We rented a car which was very cheap. Like 18 euros per day (gas is expensive tho). The roads are in great shape. The only issue for novice or timid drivers is that the roads in the mountains are narrow.
After Croatia it would probably be Bulgaria (Plovdiv, Varna, Sofia), Albania (Butrint), Serbia and Romania, they all have lots of cool places of historical interest. Bosnia and Montenegro would be on the bottom of the list, but Mostar and Kotor are obviously pretty cool places.
I was just in Albania for a week (Tirana and Shkoder), and it is absolutely safe. Transportation information is difficult to come by, so you just have to ask around. From my experience furgons (10 seater vans) just have a certain corner that they leave from when they fill up. There's no reason to be concerned. It’s a very easy city to travel in, has great sights for you to visit, and you likely won’t feel awkward being alone in the city. If you’re thinking about visiting Zagreb alone, maybe this is the sign you need to book that trip!

Tirana is very nice to explore in this time of the year, but care from the heat. If you do stay in Tirana for a few days I would recommend Pazari i Ri,Sheshi Skenderbej and the national Museum to get a feel of the countries culture, I'd also recommend visiting the National Art Gallery very close to the Museum as there is an exhibition by artist Edi Hila that attracted many foreigners and tourists.
